OCEANIA CSC ALUMNI NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2008

Dear Fellow Alumni,

Welcome to 2008. I hope the year is good to all of you. This is the first in the 2008 series and as you will see a range of activity within the Alumni network continues.  We also have included a Where Are They Now section searching for several Alumni that we have not been able to trace.  If you know of their whereabouts that would be very useful to add to our listing.  This newsletter can be accessed on www.cscaustralia.com

EPLD 2006 - Post Conference Evaluation

As many of you are aware, the Australian Government's aid agency (AusAID), and a number of other Australian Government departments/agencies provided significant funding and in kind support for EPLD2006. Prior to the Australian Government agreeing to any funding requests for EPLD2009, AusAID initiated an independent assessment of the inaugural EPLD in September 2007. External consultants and Contractors were engaged to undertake the assessment and in particular the assessment aimed to examine the impact the Conference had on participants post their attendance. The assessment also involved discussions with a range of EPLD Alumni, organising staff etc via face to face and phone interviews as well as in country visits. The final assessment report was initially due to be lodged with AusAID pre-Xmas however for a number of reasons including the federal election the finalisation of the report has been delayed. It is now expected to be received by AusAID during February 2008. Informal and anecdotal evidence indicates very positive feedback was conveyed to the assessors about attendance at EPLD2006 as well as post-Conference impact.

EPLD 2009 - Progress Report

Initial planning and fundraising activities are continuing for a second Emerging Pacific Leaders' Dialogue (EPLD) currently scheduled for September/October 2009.

In view of the AusAID independent assessment of EPLD2006, fundraising requests to date have been limited to a range of potential principal sponsors including international agencies such as The World Bank as well as key private sector organisations and governments across the Australasia/Pacific region.

At this early stage, we are very pleased indeed to confirm that firm commitments for substantial staged funding support for EPLD2009 have been received from the Victorian and French Governments as well as the ANZ Banking Group.

Assuming a positive independent assessment report to AusAID leads again to strong funding support from the Australian Government for an EPLD2009, planning and organising activities for the event will move into top gear with the early finalisation of a Pacific Leadership Foundation Board supported by a range of support Committees and Panels.

EPLD2009 - Call For Alumni Expressions of Interest

EPLD2009 remains our next significant CSC event in the region. Alumni members wishing to play and active part in the planning and organising activities for EPLD2009 are requested to confirm or re-confirm their willingness to contribute to the important Pacific regional conference by emailing Brian Pickett on epld@cscaustralia.com

Update on CSC2011

CSC Trustees in the UK have made submissions to stage the Eleventh Commonwealth Study Conference in 2011 to recent meetings of the CSC International Liaison Group (ILG).

It is expected that a final decision on the host nation for CSC2011 will be made during the next meeting/tele-conference of the ILG scheduled for Wednesday 20 February 2008.

A possible alternative bid from Jamaica on behalf of a group of Caribbean countries has not been received at this stage.

Dick Warburton and Brian Pickett as Chair and Secretary of the ILG respectively for the past three and a half years are expected to pass on these current ILG responsibilities to representatives of CSC India shortly following the 20 February 08 meeting.

This handover is consistent with established ILG practice and from this time Dick and Brian will continue as CSC Australia representatives on the ILG.

The Oceania Alumni Database

Background

During 2007, the Australian Executive Committee supported the development of an electronic CSC Alumni database.  The database was completed mid-year.  It contains 577 Australian and Pacific Alumni members 1956-2007.   The database can be accessed via the internet at www.cscaustralia.com  This database is the definitive source of alumni information.  The aim of the database is to encourage Alumni to update their own records as the need arises.  It will allow members to search for fellow Alumni and make contact by email (if an address is provided).  Several Alumni already have provided feedback they have found useful in searching for fellow members.

The CSC internet site also has developed a blog to provide an opportunity for Alumni to share information and broaden their network.  We are hoping to use the blog as a means for communication for those wanting to being involved in EPLD09 - this method will reduce the number of individual emails and enable group discussion to more easily be undertaken.
